Women have become more comfortable with their bodies and more aware of the function and appearance of their genitalia. As a result, surgical vulvar reconstruction to address congenital asymmetries of the external female clitoris and labia and vulvar rejuvenation to address changes of the external genitalia related to age and childbirth have become commonly sought after procedures. Here at Atlantic Plastic Surgery, we offer correction of the function and appearance of the external female genitalia with procedures such as labiaplasty and fat grafting.
What is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a customized procedure that reduces or tailors the size of the external genitalia, including the labia minora, labia majora and clitoral hood to eliminate irritation, create better symmetry and or achieve a more attractive vulva.
Why do women get labiaplasty?
Some women are born with hypertrophied labia that can cause irritation and pain with exercise. Other women are born with a significant size difference between their labia causing asymmetry. And finally some women experience stretching and enlargement of their labia as they age or after child birth. These are all reasons a woman may seek labiaplasty.
What is Fat grafting?
Fat grafting is a procedure where fat is taken from a place on your body that you don’t want it and it is injected into a place where you do. The fat creates a permanent volume correction and the stem cells in the fat also help rejuvenate the overlying skin. This procedure is done on many parts of the body, including the vulva.
Why do women get fat grafting to the vulva?
Like many parts of the body, the labia majora, the outer lips of the vulva, can become deflated with age resulting in floppiness or resting separation. This can be exacerbated by the stretching of the vulva during child birth. To regain a more youthful appearance to the vulva, fat can be injected into the labor majora to permanently restore their structural integrity and appearance.
