Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone Breast Implants in New England near Maine, Vermont, and Boston, Massachusetts

In 1992, due to a lack of information about their safety, the United States Food and Drug Administration put a moratorium on the use of silicone breast implants. Serving Boston, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, and the greater Northeast, Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center is now able to offer silicone breast implants. To learn more, click on the links below.

Why Choose Silicone Breast Implants?

Silicone is closer in texture to actual breast tissue, so silicone breast implants tend to have a more natural feel and tend to move in a more natural way. Saline breast implants are prone to rippling, causing wavy indentations to appear along the bottom of the breast. This rippling effect is much less likely to occur with silicone breast implants. If you are in Boston, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, or another area near Portsmouth, New Hampshire, contact Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center. Dr. Lawrence N. Gray will be happy to explain the advantages and disadvantages of silicone breast implants.

Are Silicone Breast Implants Safe?

When the FDA halted the use of silicone breast implants in 1992, it was not due to any proven dangers associated with them. It was simply due to a lack of information about their safety. There was some suggestion that, in the rare case of a leaking implant, silicone gel was linked to a variety of medical problems. Silicone gel implants have now been studied for over a decade since the FDA called for a suspension of their use, and researchers have still found no link between health problems and silicone breast implants. In fact, over 90% of breast implants world wide are silicone implants. Silicone implants have been used safely throughout the world for 40 years. Patients from Boston, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, and other parts of New England often come to Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center to have breast augmentation with silicone breast implants as part of a safe study that has been approved by the FDA.

“What will I look like?” is the number one question patients ask Dr. Lawrence Gray when considering breast augmentation.  Now, Dr. Gray, can accurately answer this question in 3D pictorial form.   Using the very latest in medical technology, The Portrait 3D Surgical Simulation Platform by Axis Three, Dr. Gray and his staff can give patients an actual visual of themselves simulating the before and after – in photo realistic 3D.  The Portrait 3D helps Dr. Gray and the patient work together to select just the right implant—size, form and shape, that best compliments their individual body.  Additionally, this cutting edge technology allows greater guidance and direction for more accurate customization, placement and shaping of the implants especially helpful for any asymmetry issues.  Importantly, this visualization enables patients to see the desired outcome in realistic 3D from all angles—overhead, side, front views, before the procedure is performed and make any necessary adjustments. The simulation is also helpful for patients to understand if breast implants alone would correct sagging skin or if they might need a breast lift.

Dr. Gray is the first and only surgeon in New England to have this advanced technology. On average, Dr. Gray performs about 250 breast augmentations a year, more than 4 times the national average. Currently, there are only 10 of these visualization machines in the U.S.  “At Atlantic Plastic Surgery, our patients love this new technology. It allows them to ‘try on’ various sizes and shapes to determine what is right for their body and visually make any adjustment or changes,” says Dr. Gray. “It increases the comfort level of the patient and with the help of the software; we can show the patient a range of sizes, shapes and placement and take precise accurate volume measurements optimizing what is best for their body. We compare the "before" with up to 5 simulated results.”  The Portrait 3D Surgical Simulation Platform by Axis Three is available at Atlantic Plastic Surgery at no extra charge and is included as part of the consultation. “At Atlantic Plastic Surgery, our goal is to make sure our patients are very happy with their result for a long time to come.”
