Hancock, Massachusetts- Dr. Lawrence N. Gray, plastic surgeon at Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, spoke at the annual meeting of the New England Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons held in Hancock, Massachusetts, June 4th to 6th , 2010. This is the 8th time Dr. Gray has given a presentation at this meeting. The conference consisted of two days of scientific presentations on plastic surgical topics. Surgeons attended from all 6 New England states as well as visiting professor and plastic surgeon, Dr. Edwin Wilkins from the University of Michigan, who spoke about surgical safety in reducing deep vein thrombosis and breast reconstruction

Dr. Gray’s presentation, “Improving Results of Augmentation Mammaplasty Using the Axis Three Imager” focused on the use of this new technology to improve communication and accuracy for patients desiring breast augmentation. He showed that there has been a significant reduction in secondary surgery, a higher level of patient satisfaction after using the 3D imager and that the imager has significantly enhanced communications with patients resulting in realistic expectations of surgery. Dr. Gray is the most experienced breast surgeon using this technology and feels it will be the standard of care within a few years. In April, Dr. Gray also met with Axis Three chief engineer to make improvements in the technology to make it usable for patients who already have implants and for patients seeking breast reduction.

The program, “Skin Care 2010: Capitalize on Your Skills”, was attended by skin care specialists from the United States and other countries. It presented the latest advancements in skin care treatments, products, and all aspects of skin care management.

Ms. Saunders and Ms Conneen attended courses in practical applications for lasers, The Art of Great Service, Complex Case Studies, Updates in Plastic Surgery, and Emerging Technologies and Trends in Skin Care Formulations and Ingredients. A special round table discussion attended by Ms. Saunders and Ms. Conneen focused on the Fractional Laser Non-ablative treatment protocols, treating pigmentation, maximizing results with chemical peels and the genetics of skin aging.

“Our patients are the beneficiaries of this additional high level in training”, states Conneen. The meeting also presented information on skin biology and anatomy for plastic surgical nurses and medical aestheticians. Among topics covered were cell turnover, collagen production benefits from certain products and chemical peels, and the delivery system of skin care products for the most highly effective skin treatment programs.

Spring Open House Loved by Patients

May 12, 2010

The Spring Open House was held at Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Friday, May 7th from 5 pm to 7pm. Guests, who numbered 124, enjoyed refreshments while watching numerous scheduled demonstrations, attending a private consultation or learning one-on-one with skin care vendors. Although the twice-yearly occasion is held as a learning and informational experience, the atmosphere was entertaining and enjoyable.
Dr. Lawrence Gray conducted free brief consultations on a variety of plastic surgical procedures: breast augmentation with saline and silicone implants, Scarless breast reduction, liposuction, tummy tucks and facial enhancement surgery. Demonstrations were given on the amazing 3D imaging system, answering the number one patient question: What will I look like after surgery? This surgical simulation tool first takes a 3D picture of the patient’s body and then allows the patients to select different implants sizes and see how it will appear on their body. Dr. Gray’s 3D imager, the only one in northern New England, can give patients far better information than they can get currently through discussion and simply looking at before and after pictures.
The fraxel laser was demonstrated by Dr. Mark Ballentyne on pre-arranged current patients. This non-invasive treatment produces smoother fresher looking, tighter skin with improved tone and texture and reduced wrinkles around the eyes. Dr. Ballentyne also talked about the differences between Intense Pulsed light and the Fraxel laser and later administered both Botox Cosmetic and Dysport injections on patients to smooth out facial wrinkles. Botox, he discussed, blocks the facial muscles that contract when you frown or squint, and reduces the indentations between your eyes and worry lines across your forehead area.
Dermal fillers, which help restore facial volume where collagen has been lost over time, were administered on pre-arranged patients by Dr. Mark Ballentyne. Restylane, one such injectable filler, enhances the lips and fills hallows around the eye area and skin depressions. Radiesse, one of our longest lasting fillers, was used in a demonstration to treat the nasolabial folds, which run from your nose to the corners of your mouth. Juvederm, another soft tissue filler, was shown to reduce lines, restore volume to lips and around the eyes and contour other facial folds. Artefill, currently the longest lasting dermal filler, was demonstrated to correct nasolabial folds and wrinkles on the upper face.
Patients waited patiently for their turn to have a free Visia Skin Analysis session. This digital skin analysis uses a multi-spectral imaging system to identify problem areas of the patient’s complexion, allowing for a customized skin treatment program that targets those areas.
Sclerotherapy, a leg vein treatment for unsightly, painful varicose and spider veins in the legs and ankles was demonstrated throughout the evening. Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center uses advanced lighting for magnification ensuring precision in treatment.

Dr. Lawrence Gray, of Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center, attended the 2010 meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, held from April 23nd to the 27th in Washington, DC. Over 1,400 surgeons from around the world attended this scientific meeting, A Capital Meeting with a Global Perspective. The conference offered board certified plastic surgeons learning opportunities in scientific sessions, teaching courses, panels, papers, and seminars on the latest in surgical techniques and patient safety by leaders in both American and International plastic surgery.

Among the topics were the myths of laser liposuction and injection lipolysis, revealing that since their introduction four years ago, there has been no scientific evidence of any benefits over traditional liposuction.“Hot Topics and Emerging Technology” in plastic surgery included review of new options in injectables and non–invasive procedures, which are expanding patient options and producing even more pleasing patient results. Reviews also show that there is largely a lack of evidence of any skin tightening for using Thermage. Dr. Gray learned the latest techniques on rhinoplasty. There continues to be more focus on shaping noses with sutures instead of using grafts. The latest updates on breast lift surgery discussed that more surgeons are now focusing on actual elevation and suspension of the breast, which Dr. Gray has been doing for the past 2 years.

Dr. Mark Ballentyne Now a Sculptra Aesthetic Trained Physician

February 26, 2010

Posted under: Uncategorized — lgray @ 6:05 pm

Dr. Mark Ballentyne of the Skin Wellness Center at Atlantic Plastic Surgery has completed the official training enabling him to administer Sculptra Aesthetic, a new type of facial injectable filler. Sculptra Aesthetic offers this specified training to physicans to insure that the appropriate injection technique is provided to patients.
Sculptra Aesthetic is a stimulatory filler which restores lost collagen and provides noticeable, natural results that emerge subtly and can last up to 25 months. It helps correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles, and nasolabial folds, that appear with aging. Sculptra Aesthetic is made from poly-L-lactic acid. This main ingredient is a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic material that has been used by physicians for decades, in treating AIDS patients for facial atrophy.
Collagen is a key structural component that keeps skin youthful looking and smooth. As you age, your body’s collagen production decreases, and you may begin to see wrinkles. Sculptra Aesthetic works to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles: nasolabial folds (smile lines), the lines framing your mouth (marionette lines) and chin wrinkles. Within the deep dermis, your skin’s structure is reinforced as Sculptra Aesthetic helps to replace lost collagen. This reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness of your shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds that has been depleted over time.
The result is that Sculptra Aesthetic is different because it gradually and subtly corrects these facial wrinkles in a series of treatments administered by a Sculptra trained physician. The improvement builds over time, instead of producing overnight improvement. A full treatment of Sculptra Aesthetic, an average of three injection sessions over a period of a few months, can last up to two years. The number of injection sessions and the number of injections per session vary from person to person. Sculptra Aesthetic can uniquely provide a refined, more youthful looking appearance in a subtle fashion that can last up to two years.

This note was sent to us by a patient:

“I had a high level of fraxel on my neck as the same time as Dr. Gray did a blepharoplasty on my upper eye lids. Now, 6 days later, my eyes are healing up beautifully, although some stitches have not dissolved yet. But, the fraxel result after one treatment is phenomenal! Dr. Ballentyne said I might need 3 treatments, but I see huge improvement after just one! I’m thrilled!”

Finance Rates Favorable for Patients Again

Posted under: Financing — lgray @ 9:37 pm

Good news for patients seeking surgical enhancements: Finance rates are very favorable again. The approval rate for patients seeking financing has also increased, making it easier for more patients to obtain breast augmentation, scarless breast reduction or liposuction procedures they want instead of having to wait until they can afford it out of pocket. Finance companies are also now providing assistance for non-invasive procedures such as dermal fillers and laser procedures. Now, patients can schedule the very popular treatments, Fraxel laser and IPL or Intense Pulsed Light.
